Roger W. Wells

Wildlife and Land Management Biologist, Tallgrass Legacy Alliance 

Roger W. Wells is a wildlife and land management biologist based near Emporia, Kansas. He has over 50 years of experience in upland game bird management working for Kansas Wildlife and Parks, Quail Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation, and National Shooting Sports Foundation, plus his own private wildlife consulting firm.

Wells received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fish and Wildlife Biology from Kansas State University in 1973. His work experience includes three positions with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks culminating as statewide Small Game Project Leader, National Habitat Director for Quail Unlimited, Inc., Upland Habitat Director for the National Wild Turkey Federation, and Director of the Explore Wingshooting Program for the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

Wells has served on numerous international, national, and local wildlife boards and committees in addition to being active in many conservation organizations. He has been a member of The Wildlife Society since 1972 and was a founding member of the Kansas Chapter of The Wildlife Society (TWS). Wells received certification as a Certified Wildlife Biologist from TWS in 1979. 

Wells and his wife, Nancy, own and operate the family’s 450-acre farm in Lyon County, KS. In 1999, they received the 1999 Kansas Bankers Association Wildlife Habitat Conservation Award in recognition of the wildlife enhancements made to the farm. In 2000, they received the Wildlife Stewardship Farm of the Year Award in Upland Game Management from Progressive Farmer / Rural Sportsman Magazine in Birmingham, AL. The Wells’ AnDiShe Farm, named after their three daughters, was recognized as the nation’s best-managed working farm for upland game in 2000. The Kansas Wildlife Federation named Wells as the Wildlife Conservationist of the Year for the state of Kansas in 2001. Wells has many other awards and recognitions over the years for his work in wildlife conservation and youth activities. The AnDiShe Farm is widely noted for the conservation practices the family has implemented, and the family has hosted numerous tours over the years for small to large groups and private individuals. 

Wells has been a Hunter Education Certified Instructor for 34 years and has taught over 130 classes, and more than 3,500 students. He is a mentor to youth hunters and invites young hunters to deer and waterfowl hunts on the farm each year. Wells is also a certified NRA and 4-H shotgun shooting sports instructor. He is a 4-H Shotgun Shooting Sports and USA High School Clay Target League instructor coaching young shooters to state championships and national tournaments. 

Wells enjoys hunting, fishing, and all related activities, especially with his grandchildren. His greatest love in life is introducing young people to the outdoors, wildlife, and conservation.
