Rex Buchanan

Director Emeritus of the Kansas Geological Survey

Rex Buchanan is the Director Emeritus of the Kansas Geological Survey, based at the University of Kansas. He is a native of central Kansas, with degrees from Kansas Wesleyan University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the co-author or co-editor of the following:

  • Roadside Kansas: A Guide to Its Geology and Landmarks (University Press of Kansas)
  • Kansas Geology: An Introduction to Landscapes, Rocks, Minerals, and Fossils (University Press of Kansas)
  • Petroglyphs of the Kansas Smoky Hills (University Press of Kansas)
  • The Canyon Revisited: A Rephotography of the Grand Canyon (University of Utah Press)
  • Recent Seismicity of the Southern Midcontinent (Geological Society of America)

Buchanan was president of the Kansas Association of Conservation and Environmental Education, Secretary and Treasurer of the American Association of State Geologists, and a Fellow of the Geological Society of America. He also does occasional commentaries on Kansas Public Radio.
