Bruce Bauer graduated from Northern Arizona University in 1999 with a degree in Forest Management and began working at Santa Clara Pueblo in 2003 through 2012 as the Pueblo's Director of Forestry. During this time he spent the majority of his time heading numerous burned area restoration and hazardous fuels reduction projects following the Cerro Grande Fire and the Los Conches Fire. In 2013 Bruce started his own business, Sustainable Ecosystems, and since have had the opportunity of working with numerous tribes and Pueblos throughout northern New Mexico, as well as with the US Forest Service and many other collaborators and partners. Starting in 2014, Mr. Bauer began restoring Santa Clara Creek following devastating flash floods that has resulted from the Los Conchas Fire and has been working alongside field crews on the creek and its tributaries every year since. Work first started at the top of the Santa Clara Creek Watershed and has been systematically progressing down canyon. So far approximately 8,000 sediment catchment structures have been completed in 64 drainages across over 16,200 acres of sub-watersheds and over 39 miles of tributaries have been worked. These projects have included work in streams, ephemeral channels, wetlands, extensive monitoring, fencing, riparian tree planting, wetland surveys, and reforestation activities.
