Dr. McClelland's research addresses the dynamic linkages between watersheds and coastal ecosystems, considering how variations in export of water and water-borne materials from land to the coastal ocean influence biogeochemical cycling and food web relationships in estuarine environments. His work includes studies of coastal erosion, groundwater, and river inputs to estuaries in the Arctic, Gulf of Mexico, and Northeast US.
